From the jet-setting island of Capri to the stunning Amalfi towns, passing through ancient Pompeii, this Field Learning activity will take students to one of the most spectacular parts of the southern Italian coast. Pompeii and Capri will provide the backdrop for a deep dive into ancient Roman life and customs. Following the eruption of Mount Vesuvis in 79 A.D., Pompeii remained buried in mud and ashes, lost to the world, its site forgotten, and the forms of many inhabitants were preserved intact in the bed of ashes in which they had perished. The site was only re-discovered in 1748, when a century-long, systematic effort to dig the old city out of its grave began in earnest. At present, nearly half of Pompeii has been laid bare, and we are able to see for ourselves how the Romans lived. 
The visit to Capri will allow students to study another period of ancient Roman history. The reason why the Roman Emperor Tiberius left Rome to spend the last eleven years of his life on the rocky island of Capri is still a mystery (although you might imagine why once you see Capri!). Nevertheless, a visit to Capri and to at least one of the twelve villas which were built at this time will give students a profound insight in the life of this Emperor.

Itinerary: 

Early evening departure from Florence on Friday, June 3. Guided tour of all three destinations and main sites (Capri: boardwalk and the Piazzetta, Amalfi: Cathredral of Amalfi, Pompeii: Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Rosary). Food tasting of local products, time to work on FL assignment and free time. Return to Florence on Monday, June 6.

Learning outcomes:

• Become familiar with the history of Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast and the wider region of Campania
• Define Italian “regionalism” and understand that there are many “Italies” and many “capitals” in the history of Italy
• Be able to describe the Roman Empire’s accomplishments in every field of knowledge and its contributions to Western civilization
• Reconstruct daily life in Pompeii through the examination and analysis of significant objects in the context of historical evidence
• Be able to place artworks and other archaeological artifacts in their original context
• Become familiar with the history of Pompeii, its people, the disaster that befell its inhabitants in 79 A.D., and the rediscovery of the most important sites
• Trace the origins of many aspects of Western European culture and of modern Western society in general
• Gain a broader knowledge of food and products that are unique to the Italian territory, history, and culture 
• Increase critical thinking, especially in relation to the role tourism plays in marketing the history, food, and culture of Italy
• Develop team-building and collaborative skills
• Increase awareness of cultural similarities and/or differences
